Compagnie Baninga / DeLaVallet Bidiefino (France, Congo)
Constructing a place, a rhetoric, some hope; Congolese choreographer DeLaVallet Bidiefono dreamt of a performance built on the idea of construction. Building and creating is about gathering scattered fragments, splicing split pieces, reconciling antagonisms. In any case, what is dance if not the embodiment of poetry?
In Monstres/On ne danse pas pour rien (Monsters/We don’t dance for nothing), the choreographer guides his nine dancers and three musicians, all creatures breathing life to a piece amalgamated with Congolese and European influences. Since art can be a way of opposing a regime, these monsters, both men and women, symbolize resistance to the dictatorship ravaging present-day Congo. DeLaVallet Bidiefono firmly believes that the energy and evocative nature of contemporary dance can contribute to the construction of a different political landscape.
